Newport start Leslies Motors Indoor League defence with win
|30 Oct 2016
Newport's defence of their Leslies Motors Indoor League title got off to the perfect start on Sunday evening as they defeated IOW EPP in a repeat of last weekend's cup final.|
The opening partnership of Nat Riddett (33 not out) and Gareth Bricknell (32) gave Newport a solid foundation before Kevin Winchcombe's quickfire 25 not out saw Newport finish two runs short of a fourth batting point on 138-3.
3-21 from Riddett and 2-27 from Bricknell then saw IOW EPP collapse from 49-1 to 59-4 in a tame reply. Ben White (39) and James Woodward (25) added some respectability to the total, but the EPP side were bowled out for 103 from the final delivery.
Ventnor announced their arrival to Division 1 with a crushing victory over Northwood. John Buckman (36), Ben Attrill (28 not out), Martin Blackman (28 not out) and Dan Cox (27 not out) all retired as Ventnor smashed 112 runs from the final six overs to finish on 184-3.
It was a total that Northwood were never in danger of chasing despite an opening partnership of 82 between Ashley Goldsmith (29 not out) and Jake Cass (23). Blackman took figures of 2-19 as Northwood ended 62 runs short on 122-2.
In Division 2, Northwood II are the early leaders after defeating Ryde Cavaliers. Jack Millward (31) and Flynn Powell (25) helped Cavaliers recover from 42-2 as they posted 141-5. Jack Barrett was the pick of the Northwood II bowlers with 2-39 on his indoor debut.
Northwood II's reply started well with 98 runs coming from the opening six overs, thanks mainly to Callum Witham (26 not out) and Jake Cass (25 not out). Jordan Langdon then made 19 as the total was chased down for the loss of just one wicket with five deliveries remaining.
Shanklin are just behind Northwood II after a 43 run defeat of Newport II. Callum Wright hit an impressive 49 not out, before lower order runs from Robin Moore (32 not out) and Ben White (25 not out) saw the Shanklin total rocket up to 154-3, 100 runs coming in the second half of the innings.
Ollie McArthur (50 not out) and Mike Watson (26) started well in reply for Newport II, but no other batsman made double figures as they were restricted to 111-5.
Godshill were the final winners on the night, overcoming Ryde School. Malcolm Gibson (36) and Ray Winter (34 not out) hit the bulk of the runs in a Godshill total of 145-4.
Jack Curtis (35 not out) and Tom Leon (25 not out) got the Ryde School innings off to a positive start, but the rest of the order failed to keep up with the pace and Ryde School ended on 109-3.
