Two preliminary round matches took place in the Leslies Motors Indoor Cup at Cowes Enterprise College’s Winder Centre as indoor cricket marked its return last Sunday.

Island Bakeries posted a competitive 143-3 against the Cricket Board Disability Team and needed not out scores from Ellis Ridett (47), Matt Webb (25) and Matt Stafford (26)to overcome losing 3 early wickets and some tight bowling, particularly by Becky Jude who conceded just 21 runs from her 3 overs. The Disability side lost only 1 wicket in reply (Kayton Evans 25 not out, Ollie Lacey 16 not out, Matt Rice 18) but their total of 90 meant Bakeries ran out winners by 53 runs.

An exciting finish to the second match of the evening saw Cowes just pip their local rivals Northwood to win by 1 run. Cowes lost 4 wickets in their total of 120 (Ciaran Saltzer 24, Sam Cooke 20 not out) and, despite 22 from Callum Witham and 27 not out from Ash Goldsmith, last year’s semi-finalists Northwood were unable to hit 4 from the last ball so fell just short on 119-4.

This Sunday’s cup quarter finals will see Cowes v. Ryde School (6pm), Island Bakeries v. Shanklin / Godshill 1 (7pm), Shanklin / Godshill 2 v. Ryde (8pm) and the Cricket Board’s EPP v. Brading (9pm).
