2 Nov 2014 There were no shocks on the opening weekend of the indoor league on Sunday evening, with wins for Newport, Ryde and East Cowes.

Newport made a massive 171-1 against Niton, Harry Dye (31*), Martin Blackman (30*), Gareth Bricknell (27*) and Nat Riddett (25*) all retiring in an impressive batting performance. In reply, openers Wez Maynard (47) and Tom Doble (26) started the chase well, but Blackman (2-25) and Bricknell (2-32) stalled their progress and Niton were eventually bowled out for 122 in the final over, Newport winners by 49 runs.

Ryde were too strong for Northwood, beating them by 61 runs. Openers, Harry Collier (34*) and Mark Oatley (27) started well as Ryde piled on the runs despite superb bowling figures of 4-24 from Mark Tuckwell. Charlie Sammons (25) continued the flow of runs with some hard-hitting however and Ryde finished their 12 overs on 154-5. Northwood never looked like getting close in their chase, Oatley (2-16) the pick of the Ryde bowlers as Northwood finished on 93-5, Ashley Goldsmith top-scoring with an unbeaten 30.

East Cowes were the other winners on the night, defeating Island Bakeries by three wickets. Ellis Ridett top-scored for Bakeries with an undefeated 41, and along with support from Sam Richards (24*), Bakeries posted 132-4, Mark Hartnell (1-22) and Rob Cooney (1-47) with one wicket each. Hartnell (45) and Alan Johns (30*) then took control of the match with the bat, before Steve Wright's quickfire 25* helped see East Cowes to victory with five balls to spare, Richards' 2-43 in vain.
