The Division 1 season got underway last Sunday and it is EPP who have the first points on the board following a 51 run win over Brading. The other scheduled Division 1 fixture saw Ventnor take the points as last year’s league winners Newport were unable to raise a side. In the EPP victory, good knocks from Ben Attrill (31), Zach Wells (38 not out) and Jamie Woodward (29 not out) set up a challenging total of 175-4. This proved too many for Brading who fell short on 140-5 despite Mark Hartnell’s 27 and Steve Wright’s 31. Division 2, which started last week, continued with three more matches and saw wins for both Northwood teams and Ryde Cavaliers. Northwood’s second string enjoyed a narrow victory over Health Associates. Batting first, Callum Witham’s unbeaten 30 helped Northwood 2nds to 145-3 which proved just 6 runs too many for Health Associates despite 27 from Parasanth. In the following game, the Northwood first team were determined not to be overshadowed by their club colleagues and saw off Island Bakeries by a more comprehensive 52 runs. Undefeated scores of 27 (Kerry Rice), 25 (Ash Goldsmith) and 28 (Martyn Richards) ensured that Northwood’s total of 156-2 was always likely to be too much and so it proved as Bakeries fell short in their reply of 104 for the loss of 5 wickets. The final game of the evening was a close encounter between Ryde Cavaliers and Cowes. Thanks to Charlie Bligh’s 3 wickets, Cowes could only set a target of 99 despite a hard hitting 43 from Jason Heap. Cavaliers sneaked past their target for the loss of 4 wickets, Matt Walter leading the way with an unbeaten 29.
