A young Newport U15 side upset the odds by lifting the Andy Butler Ground Specialist Cup last Wednesday evening against Ryde.

Newport's captain Cameron Beal started a great evening for himself and his team by winning the toss and putting Ryde into bat. This look a master stroke on a slow pitch as Cameron (2-18) opened the bowling with his slow left arm bowling and removed Joe Morton with the first ball of the game. He then bowled the dangerous Ollie Morgan with his four ball leaving Ryde two wickets down with out scoring.

Rory Buckeridge looked like he was getting to grips with the conditions only to be bowled by Jake Wright for 9. Oliver Hamilton (9) was run out by Will Turrell as James Ware (24) left him stranded.
Ware and Josh Moorcroft put up the only resistance and put on a partnership that gave Ryde a fighting chance as they put on a 50 run partnership. Moorcroft was eventually run out for 33. Ryde got through the 20 overs but tight bowling from Freddie Gurney (1-8) and Joe Haydon (0-13) meany they just reach 100.

Newport's openers Luke Chessell and Will Turrell got through the tough opening overs from Rory Buckeridge (1-20) and Ollie Morgan (1-4). Chessell was eventually caught by Henry Takel of the bowling of Morgan for 9. Turrell was joined in the middle by Freddie Gurney who was looking to score quickly from the start. The fog rolled in around the 10 over mark which made the going tough for batters and fielders a like. Turrell was bowled by Buckeridge for 10 and Gurney was caught and bowled by Josh Moorcroft for 33. Captain Beal (2no) and Ryan Hughes (15no) saw Newport past their target for victory as Newport won by 7 wickets.

Newport will go onto represent the Island in the regional round of the national cup at home against the Hampshire winners. The game needing to be played by the 22nd July.
