Newport II inflict Bakeries first defeat of season

20 Jan 2013 The Harwoods Renault Indoor Division Two title race was blown wide open on Sunday as Island Bakeries fell to their first defeat of the season, at the hands of Newport II. Bakeries batted first, making 109-2, with Matt Webb top-scoring with 27* and Murray Jones making 24*. In reply, Stuart Gurney and Tom Stafford both retired on 25, and Kevin Winchcombe made 24* as Newport II passed the target without loss, with three balls remaining. Godshill were the biggest winners of the night, as they beat IW Prison Officers by 78 runs. Steve Thorne top-scored with 30*, and was aided by Trev Mew (27*), Ray Winter (25) and Norton Mew (21) as Godshill made a massive 172-4. Adam Wilson made a quick 29* for IW Prison Officers but lacked support from the lower order and they fell way short on 94-2. Ryde II are now level on points with Bakeries after beating East Cowes II by three wickets. Dave Cox made 25* for East Cowes and was helped by Sam McQueen (24) and Paul Hunt (22). Pete Dickinson took 2-26 as Ryde restricted East Cowes to 114-5. Dave Buckeridge (27*) and Simon Wratten (25*) made sure of the victory for Ryde who passed their target in the eleventh over. Ryde Cavaliers II were awarded a win in the other game as IW Health Associates were unable to raise a side.
