Newport close in on another indoor title

10 Jan 2016 Newport are two victories away from another indoor league title after a comprehensive win over Ryde on Sunday evening. Harry Dye was Newport's hero, taking a hat-trick in figures of 3-12 as Ryde were bowled out for just 81, Siby Parackal top-scoring with 20. Newport made light work of their chase, Nat Riddett (30*) and Dye (26) getting their side to their target for the loss of one wicket in just the sixth over. East Cowes all but secured second place with a comfortable win over IW Prison Officers. Mark Hartnell (49*), Alan Johns (34), Rob Holdcroft (26*) and Chris Higgins (26*) all retired as East Cowes posted 206-3 from their 12 overs. Hartnell then returned figures of 3-8 from his three overs as IW Prison Officers were restricted to 85-5, Cyrus Dean top-scoring with an unbeaten 34. Niton claimed their third victory of the season, thrashing third-placed Northwood. Joby Wells (36*), Tom Doble (29*) and Ben Fooks (28*) racked up the runs as Niton finished on 144-2. Only Gavin Paddock (35) made it into double figures for Northwood, Guy Wells ripping through the middle order with figures of 4-17 as Northwood were held to 76-5.

In Division 2, East Cowes II were victorious in a thrilling, high-scoring contest against bottom side IW Health Associates. Dan Cox (42*), Sam McQueen (26*) and Tom Turtle (25*) all retired as East Cowes II posted 157-3. IWHA started well in their chase, but at 100-1 lost four wickets for just 13 runs. However, Souvik Sanyal played a wonderful innings to get his side back into the game, and IWHA needed nine from two deliveries before Sanyal was caught for a superb 63, IWHA bowled out for 149. Newport II upset the form book with a more than convincing win over Ryde Cavaliers. Ollie McArthur (35*) and Mike Watson (27*) led the way as Newport II posted 174-3. Paul Attrill then took 3-9 as Cavaliers were bowled out for just 65, Liam Roberts top-scoring with 16. Ventnor have gone top of Division 2 after defeating Island Bakeries. Ian Simmonds top-scored for Bakeries, who made 89-5, Ben Attrill the pick of the Ventnor bowlers with 2-13. Tom Stafford (28*) then helped Ventnor to a comfortable victory, as they passed their target in the tenth over for the loss of two wickets. Ryde II returned to winning ways with victory over in-form Shanklin. Jadon Buckeridge hit a brilliant 66 not out as Ryde II made 143-5 from their allocation of overs, with father Dave making 33. Shanklin never looked likely to chase down their target, Ben White (28*) played a lone effort in a total of 110-3. Godshill continued to rise up the table with their third win in four games, this time beating Ryde School. Phil Mew top-scored for Godshill with 28 as they posted 130-5. Tight bowling and early wickets made the chase hard work for Ryde School, a defiant Jamie Woodward top-scoring with 21 not out as they ended on 66-5.
