25 Apr 2015 The new Isle of Wight T20 Cup got underway on Saturday afternoon in a match between St Helens and Northwood.

Nick Heelan won the toss for Northwood and elected to bowl first. Andy Ball struck early for Northwood, with the wickets of Lee Brown (10) and Mike Parsons (4) in a fiery four-over spell of 2-18.

However, Chris Parsons and new St Helens captain, Hadleigh Carkeet, steadied the ship and accumulated runs to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Despite this, the Northwood bowlers stuck to their plans and St Helens struggled to find the boundary, Simon Goldsmith rewarded with the wicket of Parsons for 17.

Rob Holdcroft then fell for 13, a brilliant diving catch at long off from Dave Neal off the bowling of Nathan Goldsmith. A wicket for Ashley Goldsmith and a Niall Casson run out in the final over restricted St Helens to 117-6 from their 20 overs, Carkeet finishing on 45 not out from 57 deliveries.

The Northwood chase got off to the worst possible start when Kerry Rice was out LBW to Brown with the very first ball of the innings.

Despite the early wicket, a partnership between Adam Birch and Gavin Paddock flourished and took the score along to 60, until Paddock was bowled by Ian Hobbs for 29 in the ninth over.

Rob Love then dismissed Birch for 24, before Hobbs clean bowled both Neal and Ball for ducks to leave Northwood 74-5, Hobbs taking 3-15 from his four overs.

St Helens failed to strike again however, Pete Hayward (24*) and Ashley Goldsmith (12*) getting Northwood over the line in the 17th over with five wickets remaining.

Points - St Helens 4, Northwood 18
