The Leslies Motors Indoor Cup got underway last Sunday at Cowes Enterprise College with 3 preliminary round games that included matches for both the current Div 1 league and cup winners (Ryde) and Div 2 winners and cup runners up (Island Bakeries).

Ryde made a strong start to retaining the cup by securing a 70 run win over Shanklin &Godshill 1. Not out scores for Dave Pratt 46, Mark Oatley44 and Simon Wratten 30 helped Ryde total 196-3 (Peter Wright 2-38). Shanklin & Godshill fought hard but were bowled out for 126 with Stuart Robertson taking 2-30.

Island Bakeries could not repeat their effort from last year as they were easily beaten by Cowes. The Bakers were skittled out for just 57 mainly thanks to Sam Cooke (2-2), a total Cowes (61-1) passed in just 6 overs.

The other preliminary game of the evening saw the Cricket Board’s EPP side beat Northwood 2’s. EPP’s Dan Cox top scored with 35 not out and was ably supported by Oscar Vandecasteele (27) and Zeph Well (26 not out) as they hit 140-4. Ben Baker responded with 23 not out but could not prevent his Northwood 2’s side (89-5) falling to a 51run defeat.

Next Sunday sees all the remaining cup sides enter the competition at the quarter final stage with the highlight being a clash between Ryde 1 and Ryde 2.
