Ryde 2’s made it a club double as they just held off Cowes to win Div 2 of the Leslies Motors Indoor Cricket League last Sunday. Following Ryde 1’s success by taking the Div 1 crown last week, it was the turn of their second string to take the glory as they defeated Northwood 2 in the final over and take enough points to just pipCowes who are now runners up for the second season in a row.

Cowes had earlier put their stamp on the evening by hammering Ventnor by 71 runs. Cowes hit 159-3 with Josh Rice 28 not out and Jack Summers 35 not out dominating the scoring. Ventnor were then bowled out for just 88 which meant Ryde 2 had to secure at least 6 points from their game against Northwood 2.They reached their goal by losing just 3 wickets as they chased down the Northwood 2 total of 111-5 in the final over thanks to Geoff Kite (26 not out) and skipper Tom Roscoe (27 not out). Also in Div 2, Shanklin &Godshill 2 (131-4) overcame the Cricket Board Disability side (107-4) by 24 runs. Geoff Smith used all his experience to top score with 29 not out for Shanklin &Godshill 2.

Div 1 champions Ryde 1’s unbeaten season came to an end as they fell to a 3 wicket defeat by Northwood 1. Ryde 1 were bowled out for just 66 with John Jones (3-5) and Ben Baker (2-10) doing the damage. Northwood 1 lost 3 wickets but strolled to their target in just 9 overs. Island Bakeries remained without a win as they went down to Brading by 14 runs. Alan Johns (28) and Mark Hartnell (40) were both unbeaten as they led the way for Bradingwho scored 145-3. Bakeries’ fought hard but could only reply with 131-5 (Tony Cook 26, Matt Stafford 25 not out). The other game in Div 1 saw EPP (151-1) hold on to second place as they easily overcame Shanklin &Godshill 2 (125-2) by 26 runs. Not outs from EPP’s Ali Wheble 25, Zeph Wells 35, Dan Cox 25 and Oscar Vandecasteele 27 proved too much for the Westhill side whose score was led by 29 not out from Seb Egerton-Read.

Next Sunday (23rd) sees Ryde take on Bashley (Rydal) in the next round of the national indoor competition. The tie, which will be played at Rew Valley Sports Centre, Ventnor (2.30pm start) is a re-match of the game played last year when Dorset county competition winners Bashley hit the runs in the last over to win by 5 wickets. Ryde will be underdogs against the current ECB Southern Premier League champions but have a full squad to choose from including Dave Pratt who top scored with 50 in the game last year.

The Cricket Board would like to thank Leslies Motors for the last three years of sponosrship of the indoor and outdoor leagues, which now ends with the completion of the indoor league.
