Ryde start indoor league season with record score

1 Nov 2015 Ryde started their indoor league season in style with a massive victory over Division 1 newcomers, IW Prison Officers. After being put into bat, Ryde made a huge 240-3 from their 12 overs, with Stuart Robertson (55*), Liam Ringer (43), Lawrence Tolfrey (40*), Charlie Sammons (28) and Darren Hall (26*) all retiring, the most economical over going for 14, the least economical going for 31. In reply, Darren Hall took 2-9 from his three overs as IW Prison Officers stumbled through to 70-3, Steve Sprake top-scoring with 17. East Cowes were also victorious by a big margin against Niton. Chris Higgins (27*), Alan Johns (26*), Mark Hartnell (25*) and Rob Holdcroft (25*) all retired in an East Cowes total of 176-1, Joby Wells (1-33) with the only wicket to fall. Wells then made 43 in Niton's chase, but no other batsman made double figures, Rob Holdcroft taking 2-10 as Niton were dismissed for 76. Reigning champions, Newport, continued their form from the cup with a routine victory over Northwood. Despite a positive start from Northwood, only Gavin Paddock (20) and Ashley Goldsmith (13) passed ten, as Louis Payne (2-14), Harry Dye (2-20) and Lewis Wright (2-25) took two wickets each to bowl Northwood out for just 83. Gareth Bricknell (25*) led the chase, David Winter (1-17) with the only wicket to fall as Newport passed the target in the ninth over.

Match of the evening came in Division 2 between Shanklin and Northwood II. Jake Cass (26*) and James Whitewood (22*) top scored for Northwood II as they posted 128-2, Andy White the pick of the bowlers, going for just 14 from his three overs. Shanklin's chase got off to a good start through Jim Thorn (28) and Jack Powell (23), but a number of run outs changed the game in Northwood II's favour. With 35 needed from the final two overs, Ben White (23*) was Shanklin's hero as he hit a four from the final delivery to secure a thrilling tie for his side. Ryde Cavaliers started their campaign with a win over Island Bakeries. Liam Roberts (43*) and Harry Roberts (25) helped Ryde Cavaliers up to 129-4, Richard Robertson (1-22) keeping the runs down for Island Bakeries. Ryde Cavaliers looked to have the game wrapped up when Island Bakeries were 71-5, but Murray Jones smashed his way to 53 to give his side some hope, but Harry Roberts (3-24) took his wicket in the 11th over to seal the win by 20 runs, Bakeries 109 all out. Newcomers, Ryde School, won their first league match against East Cowes II. Kyle Blair (57*) and T Howells (47*) scored the majority of the runs as Ryde School posted 153-4. In reply, only Mark Manger (43) made double figures as East Cowes II were dismissed for 85, Freddie Ware taking incredible figures of 4-13 from his three overs, including a maiden. Ventnor crept over the line against IW Health Associates. Don Roe (48) and Lewis Lewis (21) top-scored for IW Health Associates in a total of 108, Harry Ridley taking 2-14. Ridley (31) and James Attrill (30*) started off the chase positively for Ventnor, but 1-10 off three overs from Roe took the game down to the final delivery, Lewis dropping the ball for four as Ventnor won by three wickets. Ryde II were the other winners on the night, brushing aside Newport II. Simon Bligh (32*), Kevin Wrigley (30*) and Dave Buckeridge (27*) all retired as Ryde II hit 169-3 from their 12 overs. Kevin Winchcombe hit 25 not out in reply, but Simon Wratten took 3-21 to help keep Newport II down to 109-4, Ryde II winning by 60 runs.
