Thorne hat-trick stuns Newport II

25 Nov 2012 Steve Thorne put in a star performance as Godshill beat Newport II for their first indoor win of the season. Godshill posted a modest 116-4, with Trev Mew hitting 35 and Thorne adding 29*, Tom Newnham taking 2-26. In reply, Newport's openers, Ellis Ridett (34) and Stuart Gurney (29) started well, but Thorne ripped through the middle order with a wonderful hat-trick, finishing with 3-20. Trev Mew also took 2-44 as Newport II were bowled out for 105. Also in Division 2, IW Prison Officers just about overcame Ryde Cavaliers II. Cavaliers hit 125-3 from their 12 overs, with Tom Dibben top-scoring with 29* and Harry Roberts adding 27*. John Turner was again in sublime form though, his 43* saw his side home in the final over with two wickets remaining, support coming from Adam Wilson (24). Shanklin continued their good start with a thrashing of GKN II. Shanklin posted 139-3, Matt Lambourne with 27* and James Lucy 25*. GKN II were then bowled out for just 58, Matt Taylor taking 3-10 and Pete Brown 2-14. The other match in Division 2 saw Island Bakeries comfortably beat IW Health Associates. The Health Associates batted first but could only make 54 thanks to 2-16 from Murray Jones. Matt Webb then hit 26* and Ellis Ridett 20 as Bakeries passed the target for no loss in just the fifth over.

In Division 1, Newport have stayed top after beating Ryde Cavaliers by 15 runs. Cavaliers started well and had Newport 49-4, but Ash Brett (42) and Louis Payne (25) saved the day for the league leaders who posted 133. Chris Higgins' 39* was in vain for Cavaliers who finished on 118-5. GKN are the only other team with a 100% record after beating Ryde by 24 runs. Mark Hartnell hit a superb 61* and was aided by Alan Johns (36*) as GKN scored 150-4. Jordan Galsworthy was again impressive, hitting 54, but lacked support and Ryde were bowled out for 126. Ventnor were also winners on the night as they overcame Niton by 2 wickets. Niton posted just 99, despite 25 from Tom Wells, Josh Franklin with 2-22 for Ventnor. Despite two wickets apiece for Guy and Joby Wells, Hugh Calloway batted well and hit 37* to see his side home in the 11th over. Northwood were awarded a win after Whitecroft failed to raise a side. Whitecroft have consequently been deducted two points.
